Don't try to warn Na'im Rodman about hitting any sort of mid-training camp wall. Football, and the encouraging depth Rodman believes is being built along Colorado's defensive interior, will be more than enough motivation to power through the midpoint of camp. On Saturday, head coach Karl Dorrell put the Buffaloes through a scrimmage at Folsom Field. The week ahead marks the midpoint of the preseason grind, with Saturday's workout counting as practice No. 10 of 25 for CU ahead of the Sept. 2 opener at Folsom against TCU. It can be a demanding portion of the calendar.

The opening buzz spurred by the start of camp has faded. Opening night remains weeks away. Yet for Rodman, one of the most experienced players along CU's defensive front, the promise of an improved season is helping the group keep their focus narrowed on daily goals. "I love playing football. So it's easy to wake up and come to practice every day," Rodman said. "It's more like the challenge is to not look so far ahead. I've just got to focus on what I've got to do today." Defensive coordinator Chris Wilson has maintained the Buffs' shift to a 4-3 front this year from a base 3-4 formation was decided in part to make the best use of the talent on the roster. There arguably is not a better combination of depth and experience among any of the Buffs' position groups than along the defensive front. Rodman has played in all 30 of CU's games since he came to Boulder as a true freshman in 2019, with nine starts. - Daily Camera

Washington State right tackle Ma'ake Fifita sustained what appeared to be either a foot or ankle injury when he found himself at the bottom of a pileup Friday. The sophomore from Everett, a starting guard last year who shifted to tackle this spring, sat on the turf and spoke with trainers for about 5 minutes before being helped upright. Fifita put some weight on his foot for a moment, then sat on the back of a cart and was transported off the field. Jack Wilson, the 6-foot-11 former Idaho and Oregon State basketball player, replaced Fifita in the Cougs' first unit. Rodrick Tialavea, a sophomore who is competing for a backup role at guard, went down with an unspecified lower-body injury shorty after Fifita. Tialavea was also carted off the field. Dickert did not speak with the media after practice, so it's uncertain how serious the injuries are. - Spokesman Review

The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education is helping fund a third-party name, image and likeness program to financially benefit UNLV athletes. Bill Paulos, a longtime Las Vegas business executive and UNLV men's basketball booster, chairs the program called "Friends of UNILV." Blueprint Sports, founded in 2020 in Las Vegas with Agassi's financial backing, oversees the NIL program. Agassi's contribution was not disclosed. "The ability for Blueprint to work alongside Bill Paulos and the rest of the leadership for Friends of UNILV will bring equity and parity to student-athletes of all sports at UNLV," the tennis Hall of Famer and Las Vegas native said in a statement. "These student-athletes have worked tirelessly throughout their career to become a member of a Division I team, and I am excited to be a part of helping them learn about business and life with their personal brands."

Paulos said more than $150,000 has been raised since the program began in October, with more than $80,000 having been distributed to athletes through deals with businesses and nonprofit organizations. A new website will go online next week that will help connect athletes with business opportunities. Nevada law doesn't allow programs such as "Friends of UNILV" to coordinate with UNLV to establish NIL deals, though a state committee has been established to study the issue. Each state has its own set of laws regarding NIL, which has become a key recruiting tool in college sports. - Las Vegas Review Journal

Longtime pillars on Washington State's offensive line, Liam Ryan and Abraham Lucas are reuniting in Seattle. Ryan signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent Monday - just over two weeks after Lucas was selected by the franchise in the third round of the NFL draft. Following the draft, the Seahawks asked Ryan to try out at their rookie minicamp. A three-year starter at left tackle for the Cougars who began his collegiate career at left guard, Ryan reportedly auditioned at both spots in Seattle and fared well enough to attain a contract offer. The 6-foot-5, 305-pounder is listed as a tackle on the Seahawks' roster.

He'll join Lucas, a right tackle and 42-game Cougars starter, on Seattle's 90-man roster when the team begins voluntary OTAs next week. Ryan emerged as a vocal leader and dependable piece on the left side of WSU's line as a redshirt sophomore in 2018 and ended up making 42 consecutive starts over the past four years. He played through a torn labrum for part of the 2021 season and missed the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 after undergoing season-ending surgery. The hip injury affected his offseason training plan and Ryan was a limited participant at WSU's pro day March 28, but he put up a respectable 25 reps on the bench press. - Spokesman-Review

Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward won't need to develop chemistry with the Cougs' newest receiver. Robert Ferrel, an elusive senior slotback who caught 109 passes from Ward over the past two seasons at Incarnate Word, announced his commitment to WSU on Tuesday evening over Twitter. The Cougars made the addition official the next morning. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Ferrel came to Incarnate Word in 2020 and quickly became one of Ward's favorite targets. The two accounted for 1,289 yards and 15 touchdowns during their two-year stay with the FCS program in San Antonio. Ferrel led UIW in catches (35), yards (474) and touchdowns (six) in the Cardinals' six-game spring season last year, earning All-Southland Conference second-team honors.

In the fall, the Nevada native finished second on the team in catches (74), yards (815) and TDs (nine), and picked up another all-conference second-team nod. A first-team all-conference pick as a kick returner last season, Ferrel averaged 26.8 yards on six kickoffs - including an 81-yard return - and 11.2 yards on 14 punt returns. The pass-happy Cardinals rode an explosive offense to a 10-3 record and a berth to the FCS playoffs. In Pullman, Ferrel will rejoin his UIW coach and QB for a sixth and final college season. - Spokesman-Review

Washington State shored up its secondary, securing a commitment from an experienced transfer cornerback in Cam Lampkin - a key defender for Utah State last season. Lampkin pledged to WSU on Tuesday evening, announcing his decision over Twitter. He signed his national letter of intent the next day. In Pullman, Lampkin will reunite with Ray Brown, who coached Utah State's cornerbacks last season then joined first-year head coach Jake Dickert's new WSU staff in January.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Texan has two years of eligibility remaining. He started 13 games for the Mountain West Conference champion Aggies last year, totaling 43 tackles and finishing in a tie for the team lead with six pass deflections. Lampkin broke into the Aggies' first unit as a sophomore in 2020, starting four of six games. A three-star recruit (247Sports) coming out of Poteet High in Mesquite, Texas, Lampkin made two starts as a true freshman at Utah State and appeared in every contest. On his career, Lampkin has 73 tackles, 10 PBUs and an interception across 33 games. He helped Utah State hold its opponents to 230.9 passing yards per game in 2021. The Aggies ranked 62nd nationally in pass defense efficiency. - Spokesman-Review

WR Calvin Jackson Jr. drew motivation from disappointment and came away with an NFL contract. The former standout Washington State receiver had "high hopes" that he'd be picked up as an undrafted free agent shortly after going unselected in the NFL draft last month. "But it didn't work out in my favor," Jackson said by phone Monday. "So, I used that to fuel the fire. Any opportunity I got, I told myself that I was going to make the most of it, and I think I did that."

The New York Jets gave Jackson his chance and extended an invite to try out at their rookie minicamp, staged over the weekend in Florham Park, New Jersey. Feeling determined and underestimated, Jackson excelled at the three-day audition and the Jets asked him to come aboard Monday. "I went there and had a chip on my shoulder," he said a few hours after signing. "Every route I ran, every catch I made, every opportunity I got - I made sure to make the most of it and I think it showed. I think (the Jets' staff) saw it. And it's a blessing for them to see that and give me an opportunity, but the job's not done yet. I still have more to prove." - Spokesman-Review
